Avista Corporation is conglomorate in energy, information and technology organized into four business lines: Utilities, Energy Trading and Marketing, Information and Technology and Avista Ventures. Originally a local utility the company has expanded in order to diversify its business.

Gary Ely, Avista's Chairman, President and CEO, joined the company in 1967 after graduating from BYU. He worked his way up through many areas of the company until he was named vice-president of its natural gas subsidiary in 1991. In 1996 he was promoted to senior vice president with responsibility for hydro production and thermal generation and was named executive vice president in January 1999. He was given overall responsibility for the company on May 14, 2001.
