The AES Corporation is a global power company that generates electricity and distributes it to wholesalers and to end users. AES owns or has an interest in more than 150 power plants in 27 countries and distributes electricity in 9 countries through 19 distribution businesses.
The company was founded as Applied Energy Services in 1981 by Roger Sant and Dennis Bakke. Sant grew up in a Mormon family and attended Harvard Business School. From 1974 to 1976 he worked for the Federal Energy Administration (now the Department of Energy) and then was the Director of the Energy Productivity Center (affiliated with Carnegie-Mellon University) from 1977 to 1981.
